Travel Assist Network Asks Senior To Check Travel Insurance
Travel Assist Network is advising seniors in the US to check their travel insurance before traveling. Travel Assist Network provides travel-related emergency services. The US Department of State says all Americans should check their travel cover, but says the advice is particularly important for seniors.
They suggest that seniors also check their cover with their medical insurance company, to see whether the cover provided applies for health costs incurred outside the United States. Most medical insurance policies do not apply to medical expenses that are incurred overseas, unless the policy holder takes out supplemental coverage. Medical treatment that is needed while a US citizen is traveling abroad will also not be covered by US Medicare and Medicaid. In order to receive coverage for medical costs incurred while traveling overseas, US travelers may need to take out travel insurance. Travel insurance policies will usually cover health care expenses that are incurred during the trip. Plunkett's Airline, Hotel & Travel Industry Almanac 2007 indicates that more than a quarter of domestic and international trips taken by US travelers will be by seniors. Travel Assist Network is concerned that seniors may not be aware that health policies will not cover medical costs during their trip. They also say that many people believe premium credit card programs that provide medical evacuation will cover any costs related to a major illness or injury. Travel Assist Network says that most of these credit card programs do not guarantee that such costs will be covered. Travel Assist Network has launched the Air Rescue CardT. This card will provide 24-hour medical assistance and evacuation to members both in the US and while members are overseas. The membership is designed to be affordable, with annual rates starting at $235 for individuals. Single trip cover can also be purchased for $75. Spokesman for Travel Assist Network, Joe Aiello, says "It may be slightly more expensive than standard travel insurance but the major difference is that our plan works." |
